Type a clock-in and clock-out time for each day, add the length of any unpaid break in minutes, and the tool instantly shows the decimal hours worked. Every row updates as you type, and the weekly total at the bottom adds up all seven days for you. Decimal hours (for example 8.50) are what most payroll systems expect, and each result is also shown as hours and minutes so the numbers are easy to sanity-check.
Overnight shifts and breaks handled
If a shift runs past midnight — say a clock-in of 22:00 and a clock-out of 06:00 — the calculator recognises that the end time falls on the next day and adds the full span, giving eight hours rather than a negative number. Break minutes are subtracted from the total worked time, so a shift from 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute lunch comes out to exactly 8.00 hours. If a break is longer than the shift itself, the row flags it so you can correct the entry.
Frequently asked questions
How are the hours calculated?
The tool converts each time to minutes, finds the span between clock-in and clock-out, subtracts the break minutes, and divides by 60 to give decimal hours. For example 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours and 30 minutes of span minus 30 minutes, which equals 8.00 hours.
Does it handle overnight shifts that cross midnight?
Yes. When the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the tool treats it as the next day and adds 24 hours. A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 correctly returns 8.00 hours.
How is overtime calculated?
The weekly total is split into regular and overtime hours at a threshold you can change (40 hours per week by default, the US federal line). Hours above the threshold are shown as overtime and the rest as regular, so you can enter the two numbers separately on a payroll form. It splits hours only — no pay rates or dollars.
Is any of my data uploaded?
No. All times are entered and calculated entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to a server, logged, or stored anywhere.
