How the tip is worked out

Enter the bill amount and a tip percentage — or tap one of the quick presets (10, 15, 18, 20, 25%) — and set how many people are splitting. The tool multiplies the bill by the percentage to get the tip, adds it to the bill for the total, and divides by the number of people so everyone knows exactly what to pay. It updates instantly as you type, so you can compare a 15% and a 20% tip in a second.

How much should you tip?

Tipping norms vary by country and service. In the United States, 15–20% at sit-down restaurants is typical, with 18–20% common for good service; many people round up for simplicity. Some places add an automatic gratuity for large groups, in which case an extra tip is optional. Whether you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total is a personal choice — tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly more conservative and perfectly acceptable.

Frequently asked questions
