How BMI is calculated
Body Mass Index is your weight divided by the square of your height: BMI = kg ÷ m². Enter your weight and height in metric (kg, cm) or imperial (lb, in) and the tool converts and computes it instantly. The standard adult categories are underweight (below 18.5), normal (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9) and obese (30 and above). The tool also shows the weight range that would put you in the normal category for your height, so you can see how far a goal is.
What BMI does and doesn't tell you
BMI is a quick, widely used screening number, but it is not a measure of body fat or health on its own. Because it uses only height and weight, it can misclassify very muscular people as overweight and can miss low muscle mass in others. It is also not validated the same way for children, pregnant people or athletes. Treat it as one rough indicator and talk to a healthcare professional for a real assessment.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI range?
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the normal range. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classed as obese.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI only uses height and weight, so it can over- or under-estimate body fat for very muscular people, older adults, athletes, children and pregnant people. Use it as a rough screen, not a diagnosis.
Is my height and weight sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged or stored.
