What the NATO phonetic alphabet is for
The NATO phonetic alphabet — also called the ICAO or international radiotelephony spelling alphabet — replaces each letter with a distinct code word: A is Alpha, B is Bravo, C is Charlie, and so on to Z for Zulu. Because words like Alpha and Bravo sound nothing alike, they survive noisy phone lines, radios and crackly calls far better than letters like B, D, P and T, which are easy to confuse. How this converter works
Every letter is matched case-insensitively to its official NATO code word, and each digit 0–9 is spoken out (Zero, One, Two … with Niner used for nine, exactly as pilots and operators say it to avoid confusion with five). Any other character, such as a hyphen, dot or symbol, is passed through unchanged so it still appears in the result. The output shows one code word per character separated by spaces, ready to read aloud or copy.
